INFORMATION
A four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-lift utility military helicopter, the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is made by Sikorsky Aircraft. In 1972, Sikorsky entered the Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition with the S-70 design. After a fly-off competition with the Boeing Vertol YUH-61, the Army chose the Black Hawk as the program’s victor in 1976, designating the prototype as the YUH-60A.
The UH-60A entered service with the United States and was named after the Native American war chief Black Hawk. Bell UH-1 Iroquois, the Army’s tactical transport helicopter, was replaced by the Army in 1979.
