The high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) is a tactical vehicle created for the US Army. It is primarily used by the US military, but it is also used by several other countries and organizations, as well as in civilian adaptations. During the 1991 Gulf War, the Humvee was widely used to navigate treacherous desert terrain; civilian Hummer versions were inspired by this use. The original unarmored design of the vehicle proved insufficient later on. It was discovered during the Iraq War that the vehicle was particularly vulnerable to improvised explosive devices.
