The Mi-8 airframe that served as the Mi-17’s foundation was altered to provide room for the bigger Klimov TV3-117MT engines, rotors, and gearbox made for the Mi-14, as well as more load-bearing improvements to the fuselage. For use in high altitudes, the new Klimov VK-2500 variant of the Klimov TV3-117 engine with FADEC control is now being shipped to China and Venezuela. The 1545 kW (2070 shp) Isotov TV3-117VM engines are available as options for “hot and high” circumstances.

The Mi-17 moniker is used for export; the Russian military uses the Mi-8MT. The Mi-17 is easily recognized because of its port-side rather than starboard-side tail rotor and the presence of dust shields in front of the engine intakes.
