The Ka-29TB (Transportno Boyevoy) is a dedicated assault transport version of the Ka-27 family that has a significantly altered airframe and is designed specifically to support naval amphibious operations. Its creation started in 1973. In 1976, the prototype flew for the first time. Trials were finished in 1979, and in 1984, production started. In 1985, the type was put into service. Western observers witnessed the first instance in 1987 while aboard the assault ship Ivan Rogov in the Mediterranean Sea.
