Facts About the airport:
The Government of Ireland decided in 1957 that an airport should be built outside Cork. After checking many places, it was decided that the airport would be located at Ballygarvan and it began to be built in 1959 at a cost of about a million British pounds. The airport was officially opened on October 16, 1961. Aer Lingus and Cambrian Airways flights (later taken over by British Airways) had already been running four days earlier. In the first year, the airport had 10,172 passengers, and today it has about 12,450 passengers daily and sometimes up to 15,000 passengers. During the 1960s, the airport expanded with more destinations and aircraft. The first jet, a BOAC DH 106 Comet landed at Cork Airport on March 29, 1964. In 1969 there were flights to London Heathrow, Manchester and Bristol.
