The house is situated on sloped land, to which the firm was careful to cause as little disruption as possible. A concrete foundation roots the structure, while an angular cantilever carries the upper level further into the forest. “What we did is nest the house into the landscape,” explains Kaven, “The cantilevers help reduce the footprint of the house, and underneath the cantilevers, plants can continue to grow.”  The structure of the house is a framework of wood and steel, clad in fire-proof cementitious siding. Floor-to-ceiling windows suffuse the space with natural light through the day, fitted with overhangs to diffuse the harshest rays and protect the outdoor deck from rain. White oak floors with a walnut inlay reflect the softness of the forest, bringing an essence of the outdoors into the interior. “A lot of our projects are about blending the inside and the outside in a seamless way,” explains Kaven, “Mother Nature has designed something that is much better than you ever could.”
