The Siege of Bastogne was a critical engagement during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, where the town of Bastogne was encircled by German forces in December 1944. The 101st Airborne Division was hastily deployed to Bastogne, despite being poorly equipped and lacking winter gear. The 101st held their ground against repeated German assaults until the Third Army broke through the German lines to relieve the troops on December 26th, 1944.
